If your yard holds a mature live oak, you own the best lighting subject in the city and it is probably standing in the dark. Most New Orleans landscape lighting spends its budget along paths and beds. The hundred-year-old canopy overhead, the single feature no landscaper could ever install, gets nothing or gets a floodlight, which is worse.
Tree lighting is its own craft precisely because the subject is enormous, alive, and different from every angle. A live oak’s canopy can spread wider than the house it shades, its limbs move in wind, and it rebuilds its entire crown of leaves once a year.

One fact shapes every tree-lighting plan in this city: live oaks molt, dropping most of the old canopy from around March into early May while the new leaves push out, a normal cycle the LSU AgCenter notes can leave a tree looking almost bare for a stretch. Many mature oaks here carry one more gift for the lighting designer: resurrection fern along the tops of their big limbs, which catches a grazing beam as living texture no other market’s trees can offer. Light the limb from the right angle and the whole surface comes alive.

Walk the yard at night with a strong flashlight and audition the candidates. Graze light up a trunk and watch what the structure does.
The flashlight audition costs nothing and settles arguments no daytime sketch can.
Photograph the auditions while you are out there. A phone shot of each candidate under the flashlight becomes the design’s reference set, and comparing them side by side the next day settles the hero list faster than memory will.
It also reveals the supporting cast. A crape myrtle or a palm near a hero oak may deserve a single soft accent so the star does not float in a black void, and that judgment can only be made standing in the dark where the audience will stand.
Uplights do their work from the ground, and their placement is the design.
On a live oak, aim to catch the underside of the big horizontal limbs. That is the shot no other tree in the country can give you.
Expect to cheat the textbook here. Oak roots flare wide and shallow, so the ideal fixture spot is sometimes occupied by a root the size of a leg. The design moves around the tree, never through it, and a slightly compromised angle beats a wounded root every time.

Finish matters alongside metal. Natural brass and copper weather into a patina that disappears into a landscape, while painted finishes on cheaper housings peel in this humidity and start announcing the fixtures the design worked to hide.
Low-voltage LED is the default platform for all of it, for reasons of safety, running cost and lamp life.
Output deserves a number’s worth of respect too. A mature oak swallows light, and fixtures sized for a shrub bed disappear into it, while overshooting turns the canopy into a stage set. Getting lumen levels right for the tree’s scale is one of the quiet skills that separates a designed yard from a bright one.
This is the step most yards skip and the one that makes visitors stop.
Height does most of the magic. Fixtures mounted well up in the canopy throw soft, wide shadow patterns, while low mounts read as spotlights and give the trick away. On a big live oak the difference between good and great moonlighting is usually just altitude and patience.
Moonlighting is climbing work with wiring in a living structure, and it is the step where professional installation earns its keep most clearly.
It is also the most forgiving effect through the seasons. Uplighting depends on the canopy to catch the beam, while moonlight’s branch shadows actually sharpen when the oak thins during its spring molt, which is why designs anchored on moonlighting hold their look all year.
The unglamorous step that decides whether the design survives its first summer.
For larger yards, running a spine cable out to a junction near the tree and branching fixtures from there beats stringing fixture to fixture across the lawn. The spine approach keeps voltage even, makes future additions simple, and puts every splice where it can be found again.
A system engineered this way runs quietly for years. One assembled from the fixture aisle usually announces its shortcuts by the second season.
In plain English: the wiring plan is where tree lighting quietly becomes an engineering job. Long runs to a back-yard oak drop voltage, wet ground attacks every connection, and a transformer mounted as an afterthought ages fast. The half hour spent on load math and cable routing is invisible in photographs and decisive in year three.
Fixtures get placed by plan and aimed by eye, after dark, from the places people actually stand.
Give the first evening a full walkthrough with everything burning: sit where you sit, walk the path a guest walks, and pull out anything that reads as a light rather than as light. The best tree designs in the city share one trait, which is that nobody can immediately say where the fixtures are.
Aiming is also where safety gets its final check: no beam into a neighbor’s window, no source visible from the street that could distract a driver, and no fixture heat near anything that minds it.
Controls finish the job: a photocell or astronomic timer brings the trees up at dusk without anyone thinking about it, and a simple zoning split lets the everyday look run nightly while the full show waits for evenings that earn it.
Seasonal re-aiming is minutes of work that keeps the design intentional, and it pairs naturally with the yearly once-over any outdoor system in this climate deserves. Done well, tree lighting becomes the anchor of the whole front-of-home look rather than an accent to it.
A mature live oak took a century or more to build its shape, and lighting it well is the fastest way a yard in this city gains drama that money otherwise cannot buy. The craft is real: hero selection, beam layering, tree-safe mounting, honest hardware and seasonal aim all have to land together.
